Suspicious Person Investigation Leads to Drug Arrest

On June 6, 2026, at approximately 5:52 p.m., deputies with the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office D Shift responded to a report of a suspicious person in the area of Hugo Church Road and Hugo Road.

Upon arrival, deputies located a male subject lying in a driveway near the roadway. The individual was identified as Derek Tyson Brokmeier, 36, of Durham, North Carolina. During their investigation, deputies observed signs indicating that Brokmeier appeared to be under the influence of an illegal controlled substance.

During the encounter, Brokmeier became increasingly nervous and fidgety. Deputies asked if he possessed any illegal substances or weapons. Brokmeier admitted to having narcotics in his wallet and voluntarily provided the wallet to deputies. A subsequent frisk for weapons was conducted, and deputies discovered Brokmeier was in possession of fentanyl and methamphetamine…
