Heavy rain turned a routine summer night into a serious flood risk across the Raleigh-area Piedmont, with a flash flood warning blanketing five counties overnight into early Wednesday. The concern was not remote creeks in the woods but the places people use every day, including small streams, city streets, highways, underpasses and other low-lying spots.
The Raleigh News & Observer reported that the National Weather Service issued the warning for Franklin, Johnston, Nash, Wake and Wilson counties. Forecasters said 2 to 3 inches of rain had already fallen in parts of the region, with another 1 to 1.5 inches possible.
Raleigh, Wilson and Small Towns in the Crosshairs
The alert specifically called out Raleigh, Wilson, Zebulon, Elm City, Bailey, Knightdale, Wendell, Sharpsburg, Middlesex, Sims, Pilot, New Hope and the Tar River Reservoir.
