CLAYTON — The town could become a partner in a second county water-treatment plant.
To meet growing demand, Johnston plans a second water intake on the Neuse River, along with a reservoir to store the water and a plant to treat it.
“A significant part of that volume would be attributed to the growth in Clayton,” Joshua Baird, the town’s water resources director, told the Town Council on Nov. 4. “That being the case, the county has requested that the town be a party in that project if it were to move forward.”
In response, the council last week signed an agreement with the county for the project’s preliminary engineering.
The town wants to be a full partner in that preliminary work, Baird said. “If the town is going to be a partner and have contributions, whether that be capital or other, we certainly want to have involvement in that process and project,” he said. “The town has requested that the town be a 50/50 share in the preliminary cost to really understand what the project looks like.”
