NCSU researcher recruiting Pitt County residents for tick survey

North Carolina State University researchers are asking Pitt County residents for help in a study documenting local tick species.

Working with Pitt County Environmental Health, the researchers want local people to submit ticks they come into contact with naturally in Pitt County. Pitt County Environmental Health is distributing the free tick collection kits and is hoping to recruit individuals who work and play in wooded areas and locations with tall grasses.

“Knowing which ticks are biting humans is the first step in preventing disease transmission,” said Amanda Morrison, Pitt County vector control program manager. “Each species carries its own risks and identifying them helps target treatment, guide research and protect public health.”…
