RALEIGH, N.C. — Amid growing fears that the Sig Sauer P320 can fire without someone pulling the trigger, leading to injuries and even deaths, some police departments nationwide are reevaluating their use of the handgun. Despite mounting criticism and a recent military death tied to the weapon, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol told WCNC Charlotte its more than 1,500 troopers are still carrying the widely used firearm.
In response to WCNC Charlotte’s reporting, Sen. Mujtaba Mohammed (D), NC-38, is now asking questions of his own.
“Law enforcement is a very tough job. These are men and women who literally put their lives on the line every single the day they kiss their families goodbye,” Mohammed, who represents Mecklenburg County, said. “The last thing we need is our law enforcement or our state highway patrolmen to be shot by their own firearm, because it spontaneously discharged.”…
