Durham, NC – North Carolina Central University’s (NCCU) 2025 homecoming plans mark a dramatic shift as the university takes unprecedented steps to protect students, alumni, and visitors in the wake of last year’s violence.
In 2024, two separate shootings during NCCU’s homecoming weekend shook the campus community. One incident left four people injured, including an NCCU student, and led to multiple charges against suspect Jerrick Dennard Woods, including assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm on educational property. Earlier that same night, an unrelated shooting incident resulted in criminal charges against an NCCU assistant professor, though no injuries occurred in that case.
Major Restrictions for 2025 Homecoming
- No visitor parking on campus – except for ADA-accessible and RV parking with pre-approved passes.
- Tailgating only in approved areas, authorized by the Athletics Department.
- No motorcycles or external golf carts allowed on campus.
- Shuttle buses available from downtown Durham and Durham Tech, with designated campus drop-off points.
- Outdoor music and festivities end at 6:30 p.m.
- Campus closes at 7:00 p.m.; last shuttle buses depart at 8:00 p.m.
