Michelle Carlton Appointed as New Warden of North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women in Raleigh

Michelle Carlton has been named the new warden of the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women (NCCIW). Previously holding the position of deputy warden and acting warden at the same facility, Carlton is to take charge of all operations at the institution, which is tasked with housing over 1,000 women across various custody levels. This promotion follows more than two decades of experience within the corrections system, as per an announcement from the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction.

In her new role, Carlton is set to also oversee the Raleigh facility’s role as a medical hub and diagnostic center for women in state custody. According to a statement obtained by the Department of Adult Correction, Secretary of Adult Correction Leslie Cooley Dismukes said, “With more than two decades of experience in corrections, Warden Carlton has proven to be an effective leader who is well positioned to manage one of our premier institutions.” It seems the Department is confident in her ability to swiftly adapt to new responsibilities and challenges inherent to the position.

Carlton’s career began in 2003 as a correctional officer at Sampson Correctional Institution, with a trajectory that saw her to quickly rise through the ranks. Within a span of a few years, she transitioned to case manager, and by 2010, was promoted to case analyst at NCCIW. Her leadership skills further blossomed as she took on the role of diagnostic center director, eventually becoming associate warden for programs at Central Prison before returning to NCCIW as deputy warden…
