Raleigh’s Lake Wheeler Park to Cast a Spell with “Witches on the Water” Paddle Event in October

As October lurks around the corner, Raleigh’s Lake Wheeler Park is stirring up something whimsical for paddle enthusiasts with a penchant for the paranormal. The park is hosting “Witches on the Water” on Oct. 18, an event that encourages participants to dress up in their finest witchy attire and enjoy a self-guided paddle around the lake. According to the City of Raleigh, everyone’s invited to flaunt their cloaks and pointy hats as they mix costumes, cackles, and a bit of exercise on the water.

Starting at 2 p.m., those who own paddle craft such as a SUP, kayak, or canoe can join for a modest fee of $5. The organizers stress that anyone planning to showcase their inner witch on a rented kayak needs to make a reservation by the day before. All personal and reserved paddle craft are expected to be off the water by 6 p.m., as the park gates close at 7 p.m. Moreover, young witches aged between 10-16 will need an adult companion to take part in the enchanting expedition.

For those looking for an experience that leans more toward the eerie than the whimsical, Lake Johnson Park is preparing a “Haunted Halloween Paddling Tour” on Oct. 19. The tour includes a relaxed paddle from 5 to 7 p.m. that promises a dive into the haunting tales and legends of Raleigh. The spooky storytelling session, paired with insights into nocturnal wildlife and the lake’s natural history, is priced at $25 for residents and $40 for non-residents. The park encourages participants to don costumes, as long as they’re safe for paddling, with a prize waiting for the best dressed at the end of the tour…
