Wake County to lease Umstead State Park land to build new mountain bike trails

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — New mountain bike trails are set to come to Umstead State Park after the Council of State approved an agreement for Wake County to lease 252 acres of state land.

The lease, which is $1 per year, will run for seven years and two months beginning on Nov. 1. The county also has the option of two 10-year renewals.

“I think it’s a great idea,” said John Schanzenbach, who frequently bikes across central North Carolina. “It would be great to have new trails. Hopefully, they’ll be professionally built and will take into account there’s going to be beginners who will want to be introduced to mountain biking.”…
