Durham Rail Trail expected to open in June 2028 with $45 million price tag

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — Durham’s plan to turn an old railway that hasn’t been used in years into a trail around downtown is inching closer to reality.

In the works for nearly two decades, the defunct train track will be converted into a 1.8-mile trail, which is expected to cost more than $45 million in total.

“I’ve got some destinations in north Durham I’ve really been able to drive or take the bus to,” Bike Durham Advocacy Campaign Organizer Gregory Williams said. “I’m excited to go through further parts of town, just being able to ride.”

On Thursday, the city released its latest plans for the Durham Rail Trail. Officials said construction is now expected to kick off in January 2027, with a grand opening in June 2028…
