A Chapel Hill family is breathing a sigh of relief after their dog accidentally sparked a house fire — all because of a chewed-up lithium-ion battery.The five-year-old rescue dog, named Colton, got a hold of a battery-powered device, broke the safety seal, and bit through the lithium cell. Within seconds, the device ignited, setting fire to a rug in the living room.“He bit into it, and you can see it — he’s surprised by it, and then he’s like, ‘Oh, what did I do?’” said owner David Sasser, who also happens to be a firefighter. “Thankfully, it pretty much fizzled out because of the rug and because we were home so quick. That was the only thing we lost.”Sasser says the experience was a wake-up call about the potential dangers of lithium-ion batteries.
