RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – An officer who died after being shot during a struggle with a gunman at a healthcare facility in Garner earlier this month was being laid to rest early Monday afternoon.
According to the Garner Police Department, 59-year-old WakeMed police officer Roger Smith was killed in the line of duty when he got into a struggle with 29-year-old Benji Martin Jr. on Nov. 8.
The shooting occurred in the lobby of the WakeMed Garner Healthplex, which is located along U.S. Highway 70. Police said Martin is charged with murder in connection with Smith’s death.
