NC insurance commissioner schedules May hearing on proposed 68.3% rate hike

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey has scheduled a hearing for May 4, 2026, to consider a proposed 68.3% average increase in dwelling insurance rates requested by the North Carolina Rate Bureau.

Causey said his office does not agree with the rate hike filed earlier this fall, prompting the next step required under state law.

We are not in agreement with the Rate Bureau’s proposed increases filed earlier this fall,” Causey said. “The next step, according to statute, is to set a hearing date.
