Coming to Western Wake in 2026: Salem Streetscaping
Salem Street is the heart of Downtown Apex, the main thoroughfare for parades and a vibrant corridor of shops and restaurants.
This year, the segment from West Chatham to Saunders streets will transform with new streetscaping and a new gathering space. It’s part of a master plan for Downtown Apex adopted in December 2019.
What you can expect from Downtown Apex construction:
- Widened streets and curbless design that prioritizes pedestrians
- More landscaping and color-changing string lights
- Removable barriers that will allow officials to close Salem Street to vehicles during events
- A new Saunders Street Gathering Space that will add pergolas, seating, outdoor games, and a digital information kiosk.
Downtown Apex construction timeline: Physical construction is anticipated to begin in February and wrap up in October. According to a town spokesperson, the contract awarded last month begins the week of January 20.
What else to know: Take note on Salem Street traffic. While the project is under construction, Salem Street will be one-way for vehicular traffic, flowing southbound only from Saunders Street to West Chatham Street. In the meantime, Downtown Apex businesses will remain open, so you can still support your favorite local spots…
