DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — A winter storm that moved across central North Carolinaover the weekend is set to cause further complications for drivers heading out for their morning commute on Monday.

Most of the state remains covered in ice, and several crashes are expected as crews work to clear the major roads and highways.

One major wreck in the early morning hours occurred on Interstate 40 East in Durham as a brine truck overturned on the roadway. It happened close to miler marker 279 near I-885 around 4:45 a.m.

One of the eastbound lanes was shut down for a few hours, but the N.C. Department of Transportation reported that I-40 East fully reopened around 7:25 a.m.

Recorded precipitation totals, such as snow, sleet, rain and freezing rain, were small, but impacts on area roads were significant with many covered in ice. Snow and sleet totals were generally under one inch. Freezing rain ice accumulation was around .25 inches across the region and power outages were minimal…
