Pre-Dawn Gunfire Rocks South Roxboro Apartment Complex

Gunfire at an apartment complex off South Roxboro Street in Durham early Wednesday pulled a heavy police response before sunrise, with officers locking down parts of the property as they searched for whoever pulled the trigger.

Durham police told WRAL that someone fired a gun at an apartment complex near E. Cornwallis Street at about 2:30 a.m. Officers searched a unit and a grassy area inside the complex and placed evidence markers several hundred feet from that unit. Video from WRAL’s Breaking News Tracker showed investigators combing through the scene in the dark as they documented evidence.

City Leaders Are on Edge

The shooting comes as city officials warn about a recent spike in gun violence. Mayor Leo Williams blasted the “status quo” at a council meeting Monday and pushed for stronger anti-violence measures, saying, “I’m tired of kids dying when they don’t have to,” according to ABC11. Local leaders say recent killings and shootings have put new pressure on police and community groups to respond.

Investigators Comb the Complex

Video from the scene shows officers dropping evidence markers in a grassy patch and searching inside a unit as they canvassed the complex. Police have not publicly released a suspect description or announced any arrests, according to WRAL. Detectives say they are following up on tips and reviewing video from neighbors and security cameras in the area.
