Pre-Dawn Car Ambush Rattles Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh

An early morning drive along Glenwood Avenue turned into a crime scene Wednesday when someone opened fire on a car, according to Raleigh officials. Police are still working to determine whether anyone was hurt and have not announced any arrests. Investigators are asking anyone who saw what happened or caught it on video to get in touch as the probe continues.

Police Seek Witnesses

Officers rushed to the scene in the early hours of Wednesday and are actively searching for the shooter, according to WRAL. The outlet shared a short video clip but reported few additional details about a possible suspect or motive. Authorities say they welcome any tips that could help them track down whoever pulled the trigger.

Glenwood South Safety Spotlight

Glenwood Avenue, including the Glenwood South entertainment district, has already been under a safety microscope, with stepped up policing and policy shifts following a string of violent incidents and ongoing late-night complaints. Raleigh Magazine quoted outgoing Police Chief Estella Patterson saying “the hairs on the back of my neck would stand up,” while noting increased patrols and tighter traffic controls in recent years.

The City of Raleigh has also approved new amplified sound rules, set to take effect Jan. 1, 2026, with the goal of cutting down on late-night disturbances in busy hospitality zones, according to the City of Raleigh.
