NC Children’s Buys $90M, 200-Acre Apex Parcel for Hospital

North Carolina Children’s has completed a nearly $90 million deal to acquire more than 200 acres in Apex to build the states first freestanding childrens hospital. The costs of the hospital are somewhere between $2 and $3 billion. Funding is coming through a combination of state support, donations and financing. NC Children’s was formed in 2025 to develop and operate the health care campus.

The nonprofit organization overseeing the project, a joint venture between the UNC and Duke health systems, closed the deal after identifying land last year within the 1,100-acre Veridea development along U.S. 1 and Highway 540.

NC Children’s plans to begin construction on the campus in 2027. Plans for the medical campus include a hospital with about 570 beds, including more than 100 behavioral health beds…
