Cary man arrested at Charlotte Douglas airport on felony scam, impersonation charges

In A Press Release from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, officials announced the arrest of an alleged scammer targeting a Jones County Family. On March 18, 2026, the Jones County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) requested assistance from NCSBI. The scam involved a suspect contacting victims and falsely claiming their bank account had been compromised, then demanding payment to resolve the issue—a tactic commonly used in financial fraud schemes.

Following a month-long investigation, the SBI’s Coastal District, in coordination with the JCSO, arrested Christopher Aaron Murray, 40, of Cary, NC. Murray has been charged with:

  • 1 count of felony conspiracy
  • 1 count of felony obtaining property by false pretenses
  • 1 count of felony exploitation of a disabled or elderly person in a position of trust
  • 1 count of impersonating a law enforcement officer.

On Sunday Murray was taken into Custody by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. He is currently being held at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center, pending his first court appearance scheduled for Monday…
