New Johnson County jail plan tops 100,000 sq. ft. as debate grows

The new jail and sheriff’s office could be more than 100,000 square feet, significantly larger than the current jail, according to preliminary designs presented to the Johnson County Board of Supervisors.

During a presentation to the Johnson County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday, July 1, Shive-Hattery, an architectural firm hired by the county, presented an initial schematic design for the estimated $96 million building.

The plans are far from the finished result, Michael Lewis, the lead designer, said Wednesday. However, they are meant to be a starting point for the rest of the design work, noting much of the work won’t start until after the bond vote on Nov. 3…
