Iowa City schools cook takes it to another level

IOWA CITY — Iowa City schools kitchen manager Melissa Dohrer has been chosen for an esteemed national fellowship designed to transform school food.

As part of her capstone project, Dohrer will work with a team in the Iowa City Community School District to develop more plant-based entrées to add to school menus.

Dohrer, production kitchen manager at Iowa City West High School, has worked in the district’s nutrition services department for 13 years. She took the job because it was “convenient” for her family and discovered a “passion for school food.”…
