Strong to severe storms move through Wednesday evening

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Iowa’s News Now) — A cold front is moving through Eastern Iowa later this afternoon and will continue to trek southwards towards Cedar Rapids by the early evening hours. As the front moves through storms will fire off and move southward. As the afternoon passes these storms will continue to weaken but they will be initially strong.

Storm Prediction Center has issued a level 2 out of 5 risk for 60-70mph winds and heavy rain

The storm prediction center has a slight risk out for places north of Highway 20 and northwest of Highway 151. Damaging winds, small hail, and an isolated tornado or two are the largest impacts. Timing with this system is tricky as not everywhere may see rain along this line.

IMPACTS

  • Wind gusts from 60 to 70 mph: Damage to tree limbs, trash cans, weak trees snapping, bent powerlines
  • Small hail: Pea sized hail, Damage sensitive objects
  • Isolated tornado: 80-110mph damage if hit by tornado
  • Minor flooding: Some locations could see an extra inch or two of rainfall leading to already filled creeks flooding.
