CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Storms will continue to weaken overnight.
The Severe Thunderstorm Watch that was previously in effect for parts of the TV9 viewing area was cancelled early. Any additional warnings this evening will be sporadic at most.
Due to the fairly slight chance of severe storms tonight, we have not considered this as a First Alert Day. However, you should stay weather aware this evening, especially north of U.S. Highway 20.
Storms should continue to make southward progress, but will outrun some of the ingredients that would give them a chance to produce severe weather.
Another threat with these storms will be some torrential downpours, with isolated areas of 1 to 3 inches of rainfall where storms track slowly and/or repeatedly. To bring attention to this threat, the National Weather Service has a Flood Watch in place for the areas in green on the map below. If a Flash Flood Warning is issued, move to higher ground if you live in a flood-prone area. Don’t drive through flooded roadways! Remember: turn around, don’t drown.
If a storm approaches your area, seek shelter indoors. If a warning is issued, get to the lowest floor of your home, away from windows. In the event of a tornado warning, put as many walls between you and the outside as possible, like in an interior closet or bathroom. A basement is best if you have one. Cover your head and neck with pillows or blankets, or a bike helmet if you have one. If you’re in a mobile home, abandon it for more substantial shelter. If caught outdoors, try to get to an indoor shelter. As a last resort, lay flat in a ditch while protecting your head and neck. Don’t seek shelter under bridges or overpasses…
