CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The severe weather risk is lower, but storms aren’t done yet.
It’s a First Alert Day through Tuesday night. At this point, it’s primarily due to the risk of strong storms with heavy downpours. The chance of severe weather is lower than it was earlier in the evening, but it’s not totally zero.
The axis of strong storms has lined up near and south of the Interstate 80 corridor tonight. Additional storm activity will generally affect this zone in particular, though rain and some thunder are possible as far north as the U.S. Highway 20 corridor.
Storms will continue into the nighttime hours. Heavy rainfall is likely, as plenty of moisture has gathered ahead of the cold front driving these storms. Frequent lightning will still be a threat with storms even now that the traditional severe weather threats have diminished. Where storms move repeatedly, 1 to 3 inches of rain could occur in a west-to-east band. Isolated higher totals are possible. Again, this is likeliest along and on either side of the Interstate 80 corridor.
Flash flooding could develop in some spots, especially in urban areas. If you live in a flood-prone area, be prepared to move to higher ground if a Flash Flood Warning is issued. Do not drive through a flooded roadway; it’s extremely difficult to determine the condition of the roadway or how deep the water is at night. It’s always best to find another way.
