IOWA — A Tornado Warning has been issued after a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Cedar Rapids Municipal Airport, or near Cedar Rapids, moving northeast at 50 mph. Communities including Marion, Alburnett, Springville, Mount Vernon, and Swisher fall within the warned polygon shown on radar as of September 8th. Residents in the path of this storm are urged to TAKE SHELTER NOW.

Radar confirms the severe thunderstorm responsible for this Tornado Warning was positioned directly over Cedar Rapids Municipal Airport at the time of issuance, placing the immediate Cedar Rapids metro area at the center of the warned threat. The storm’s radar signature shows an intense core with the characteristic hook and rotation features associated with tornado-producing supercells.
Given the storm’s location directly over a major airport, air travel in and out of Cedar Rapids Municipal Airport could see immediate disruptions as ground crews and passengers are directed to seek shelter until the warning expires or the storm moves out of the immediate area.
