Eastern Iowa Airport turns into disaster scene for major emergency drill

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — More than 150 first responders from Linn and Johnson counties took part in a full-scale emergency exercise Tuesday at The Eastern Iowa Airport, testing how agencies would respond together to a plane crash with multiple injuries.

The exercise is required every three years as part of the airport’s Federal Aviation Administration certification.

“We are also testing a lot of our county plans and the coordination that goes into that when multiple agencies are responding,” said Heather Tripp, plans and exercise officer with the Linn County Emergency Management Agency. “We have emergency responders from organizations that span both Linn and Johnson County here today.”…
