16 Iowa City-area wrestlers are headed to the girls state wrestling tournament

CEDAR RAPIDS— The impactful thud of body slams on wrestling mats and the roaring cheers of the crowd echoed throughout the Alliant Energy PowerHouse Arena on Friday.

The IGHSAU Region Five and Six’s Super- Regional Wrestling Tournament brought out hundreds of high school girls wrestlers, who all had one common goal — punching their ticket to the state tournament.

Clear Creek Amana, Liberty and Solon competed under Region Six in Cedar Rapids. West High and City High traveled to the Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines for Region Three and Four.

Some familiar faces earned another shot at the state tournament, while some new faces won a ticket onto the big stage. Here are 16 Iowa City-area wrestlers who are state-bound.

City High

Three Little Hawks earned spots at the state tournament. Molly Carlson earned second place at 170 pounds. 105-pounder Eliza Mitchell and 145-pounder Annabelle Stelpflug both finished fourth.

Carlson, a sophomore, believes improvement will lead to better results in her second straight state appearance.
