A wanted felon has been taken into custody after allegedly trying to steal a phone from a security guard at the Old Capitol Town Center. Iowa City Police were called to the area outside Chipotle just before 6:30 Thursday night for a physical altercation. Arriving officers found 36-year-old Christopher Garrett of Holiday Road speaking with University of Iowa Police who were already on the scene. They claimed Garrett had tried to steal a phone from a mall security guard. Garrett reportedly showed signs of intoxication and was profane, belligerent and repetitive with his statements. A check of Garrett’s records showed he was wanted for allegedly lying on ATF forms when purchasing a Glock 42 from Scheels at the Coral Ridge Mall on January 3rd. Garrett reportedly indicated he was not a felon, despite a 2019 conviction for Operating While Intoxicated – 3rd or Subsequent Offense.
