Dan Gable trades Hawkeye polo, hat for Iowa City High gear at state wrestling tournament

DES MOINES, Iowa — Dan Gable is comfortable in a Hawkeye polo and hat, but he’s just as happy to trade them for Iowa City High gear in support of his grandson, Jake Mitchell.

“I’m a grandpa 14 times and I’ve got one competing here and he’s doing pretty good,” Dan Gable said.

Mitchell, a senior wrestling at the state tournament at 144 pounds in class 3A, isn’t competing in his favorite sport.

“He’s a baseball player, that’s his number one and he golfs on the team, too. He’s a competitor,” Gable said.

Mitchell also played football for the Little Hawks.
