CORALVILLE, Iowa — The City of Coralville is warning residents about a phone scam in the area, where fraudsters are impersonating police officers.
According to a post from the city on Facebook, the calls appear to be coming from the Coralville Police Department—but it’s not actually the police. Scammers are spoofing those numbers, targeting residents by falsely claiming they’d missed a court appearance or that there’s a warrant out for their arrest.
The scammers then ask for payment so their target can “avoid” going to jail, but they may also tell the victim not to come to the Coralville Police Department. Contacting the actual police, of course, would foil their ruse…
