Man charged in 11-hour standoff set to be sentenced Friday after taking a plea deal

The Grimes man who pled guilty last week to three counts of attempted murder of a police officer during an 11-hour standoff in Cedar Rapids is set to be sentenced on Friday.

Christopher Kern, 49, was facing more than a dozen charges in connection to the standoff at the Chealsea Apartments in February, but took a plea deal, reducing his charges to just the three.

Kern allegedly stole his own dog from the Animal Rescue League in Des Moines before barricading himself in a Cedar Rapids apartment to hide from police who were trying to serve his arrest warrant…
