New robotic technology at the University of Iowa helping patients, doctors

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa Health Care added three robots with the latest technology to its lineup for minimally invasive surgeries. The da Vinci 5 robots display three-dimensional imagery and are the first of their kind in Iowa.

“The robot is designed with certain features that allow it to apply less stress on our bodies when it is operating,” University of Iowa Clinical Associate Professor and Director of the Center for Procedural Skills and Simulation, Dr. John Keech, said. “There’s less bleeding, less trauma, less pain and faster recovery.”

The three new units will double the hospital’s robotic capacity and add 1,000 surgeries a year. The machines allow surgeons to feel tension while they complete surgeries…
