CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Margo Ann Williams, a 63-year-old accountant and adjunct business instructor from Scranton, Pennsylvania, was sentenced in federal court for laundering over $800,000 from a multi-state business email compromise scheme.
Williams was found guilty on September 12, 2024, of bank fraud, money laundering, and related charges. Between December 2022 and July 2023, five victims, including a Cedar Rapids church, were deceived by hacked email accounts during large financial transactions. The victims received fraudulent emails that led them to reroute funds to accounts controlled by Williams.
In one case, a Cedar Rapids church, involved in a $7 million renovation, was tricked into wiring over $466,000 to Williams’s shell corporation, “MBCI & Evercorp, LLC.” Other victims included a hotel manager in Colorado and a non-profit in Washington state…
