CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The City of Cedar Rapids is updating its ordinance for street signs to avoid confusion, improve emergency response times, and upkeep maintenance on longer signage.
City Traffic Engineer Cari Pauli said the guidelines haven’t been changed since 1972, so its bringing the ordinance up to current standards. While current signs aren’t changing, names of streets have new rules moving forward.
Pauli said the city’s signs have about a 20 year life, but the longer, larger signs often need to be replaced sooner since they are being bent or knocked down. The cost to replace a sign and post it is hundreds of dollars, and she said the city is having to replace about 15 signs every year…
