Iowa City water remains safe despite nitrate spikes

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – Cities across eastern Iowa are seeing higher-than-normal levels of nitrate in the water.

In Des Moines, the problem’s gotten so bad that lawn watering has been prohibited. But cities like Cedar Rapids and Iowa city have stayed relatively unfazed.

“Nitrates are a dissolved ion.” said Iowa City’s Water Superintendent Jonathan Durst. “So, dissolved ions in a solution are harder to remove because they’re dissolved in the solution. So, it’s like asking someone if you could filter out the salt in saltwater.”…
