Iowa enforces new hands-free driving law to curb distracted driving and boost safety

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — A new law is taking effect in Iowa banning drivers in the state from holding their phones while driving. Iowa already banned texting and driving back in 2017 but pushed for this new law because it’s easier to enforce.

Sergeant Graham Campshure with the Cedar Rapids Police Department’s traffic unit agrees. “Seeing an electronic device in somebody’s hand gives us reason to stop them and have a conversation with them,” Sergeant Campshure said.

While drivers can’t hold their phones, drivers can still use them. “If you’re using a Bluetooth earpiece device or you’re using a communication through your car’s audio system, a simple push button on the steering column will activate the phone so that you can make a call or answer a call,” he said. “If you have your phone in like a cradle or something that is attached to the vehicle that if you can answer your phone with a single touch, then you are able to answer your phone”…
