Coralville residents voice concerns over potential new license plate reader cameras

CORALVILLE, Iowa — Some concerns about privacy were raised on Tuesday in Coralville and city officials are weighing the notion of the potential purchase of traffic cameras that scan and read license plates.

There are locations in Coralville that already have these cameras, but some citizens say they’re not comfortable with the mass collection of their personal information like license plate numbers.

“The mass collection of surveillance data is, even if it’s not used for these purposes, creepy and invasive,” a resident from Coralville said during the city council meeting on Tuesday…
