CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The Cedar Rapids Fire Department responded to a grease fire on Saturday afternoon, July 26. Shortly before 2:27 p.m., Cedar Rapids Fire Department was dispatched to the Burger King in the 300 block of 33rd Ave SW. Upon arrival, crews found that everyone had been safely evacuated. Smoke was coming from the roof of the building, and inside a large grease fire was found in and around the deep fryer. The fire also extended to the vent hood. The fire was extinguished around the deep fryer and the vent hood was dismantled in order to completely extinguish the flames. It was determined that the fire started unintentionally when the oil caught fire during the transfer and cleaning process. No one was injured, but the store will be closed for an undetermined amount of time for repairs, cleaning, and inspection.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (KCRG) – Fire crews responded to an apartment fire in Cedar Falls on Friday. On July 25, officers responded to reports of an apartment fire at the 1800 W block of 8th Street in Cedar Falls. Several calls were received at 11:45 a.m. According to reports, the fire was caused by the air conditioner. Fire rescue found smoke and flames coming from the air conditioner and second story window. Residents and others inside made it out of the apartment. The fire was quickly put out. The apartment sustained fire, smoke, and water damage. No injuries were reported.

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (KCRG) – A former West Liberty city employee has been sentenced to life in prison for sexual abuse charges. A criminal complaint says Daniel Goodale, 38, of Atalissa, was charged with second degree sexual abuse for an incident that happened while he was off duty in July 2024. In May, he pled guilty to three counts of second degree sexual abuse of a child and two counts of incest. Goodale was the city’s Water and Sewer Superintendent. He is sentenced to life in prison and has eligibility for parole…
