400 thousand customers lost power during the 2020 derecho, a look back at the efforts to restore

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Electricity is something people use every day, but during the 2020 derecho 400 thousand customers were without this essential service across Iowa.

Sunday will mark five years since the derecho swept across multiple states. It’s the most costly thunderstorm in the U.S. to date, bringing down thousands of trees and powerlines.

The more than 45-minute storm came on Monday, August 10 about 12:30 p.m. and brought wind speeds up to 140 miles per hour…
