Sunday marks five years since the devastating derecho hit eastern Iowa

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Iowa’s News Now) — August 10, 2020 is a day many in eastern Iowa remember vividly as sunny skies quickly turned dark and winds picked up for what felt like an eternity.

A powerful and record-breaking derecho swept across the state, taking everyone by surprise as winds reached 140 mph in the Cedar Rapids metro in the middle of a summer day.

The strong winds sat over the second-largest city in the state for nearly an hour, damaging every building and wiping out 75% of the tree canopy…
