What is a derecho? Many learned the word on August 10, 2020

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Iowa’s News Now) — The word derecho wasn’t invented on August 10, 2020 but it was the day the many in Iowa learned what it was.

The term derecho was actually coined in Iowa in 1888 by a University of Iowa professor. Gustavus Hinrichs used the word to describe winds going in one direction in thunderstorms.

The word now brings anxiety after Cedar Rapids was slammed by the strongest derecho on record in the United States five years ago…
