IOWA CITY, Iowa– Kirk Ferentz and the Iowa passing game have gone through well-documented struggles over the past several years. The Hawkeyes have struggled to move the ball through the air on a consistent basis. For the first time in quite some time, there is cautious optimism about where it can go. Iowa feels they have depth in that position group.
Senior Jacob Gill and sophomore Reece Vander Zee are expected to be the two top options for the Hawkeyes. Gill is fresh off 35 receptions, totaling 411 yards and a pair of scores. His ability to catch the ball over the middle while enduring some tough hits really helped move the sticks. Vander Zee had a pair of touchdowns in his college debut but struggled with an injury and the physicality of the Big Ten. After putting on some additional strength, he has been a standout this offseason.
Wide receiver coach Jon Budmayr acknowledges that Iowa has more depth this season, and it is a blessing to have to decide who will get the snaps on Saturdays…
