Homeless shelter in Iowa urges sustainable funding amid growing homeless support crisis

IOWA CITY, Iowa — An argument escalated and a man drove into an encampment right by a homeless shelter on Friday, sending four people to the hospital and injuring a fifth. Shelter House Director of Development Christine Hayes says this is a growing concern with hostility towards homeless individuals.

“The animus towards people in crisis isn’t new. I think it is more common to be public about it now,” Hayes said.

A Facebook post from the shelter says Iowa only has two mental health patient beds for every 100,000 Iowans. That’s the worst ratio in America. New shifts from the Trump administration regarding this issue aren’t helping, and Hayes says there needs to be better ways to handle this…
