Victim and city council member speak out after attack on homeless encampment

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – A 29-year-old male resident of the Hilltop Mobile Home Park is in jail facing 14 charges and under an ICE detainer after police say he intentionally drove into a group of five homeless people on Friday.

The group was residing in an area with about 10 tents on a street corner next to Shelter House, an organization that provides emergency shelter and resources to homeless people.

The tent encampment has popped up at the corner of the Shelter House property because the shelter is not allowed to surpass capacity of 70 beds aside from winter weather situations when the fire department provides an exception…
