New portable ventilator at St. Luke’s hospital expected to save hundreds of children

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — St. Luke’s Hospital’s new portable ventilator is helping to ensure premature babies being transported to St. Luke’s from other hospitals are getting the respiratory support they need while on the move.

The hospital was able to to buy the cutting-edge ventilator using grant money awarded to them by Variety, a children’s charity organization.

“Our current ventilator equipment is nearing the end of its usable life for NICU and pediatric patients,” Kathie Manderscheid, Women and Children’s Services director, said. “It is imperative we have state-of-the-art equipment for our youngest patients. This portable ventilator offers the best possible care for critically ill children who require transport. Our sincere thanks to Variety for supporting this project benefiting Eastern Iowa’s critically ill children.”…
