Plans for joint law enforcement facility in Johnson County dropped

JOHNSON COUNTY, Iowa — Plans for a new joint law enforcement facility in Johnson County are officially off the table.

The Johnson County Board of Supervisors voted Wednesday to end the project, keeping a bond referendum off the November 2026 ballot. The move comes just a week after Sheriff Brad Kunkel told supervisors he no longer believed the partnership on a shared facility would work.

“We now know the path forward,” Kunkel said after the vote. “I was glad to see the board is in unanimous support that we need to go this alone. And I’m glad not only that I know what it is that I need to work on for the Sheriff’s Office, but really the public now knows what direction and what’s coming in the coming months ahead.”…
