New program lets Iowans test local water quality amid rising nitrate concerns

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — It’s been a summer of concerns over nitrates in bodies of water with some of Iowa’s rivers testing above safe levels. Now, Linn County’s chapter of the Izaak Walton League or America has a tool you can use to test those waters, like those in the Cedar River.

The “Nitrate Watch Program” gives volunteers a chance to test water using kits and then they can go to the Clean Water Hub website where they can upload their findings.

“We test multiple water quality parameters, including phosphates, dissolved oxygen, chloride, and probably most importantly the nitrate levels that are so important right now that we’re watching in Iowa,” Neil Mittelberg, the chairman of the league, said…
