Cedar Rapids mayoral race intensifies as candidates present contrasting visions

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Cedar Rapids mayoral race is heating up as incumbent Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell faces challenger Myra C. Bradwell, each presenting distinct visions for the city’s future. Voters will soon decide between O’Donnell, who has served since 2022, and Bradwell, who previously ran for mayor under the name Gregory Hughes in 2013 and again in 2021.

Bradwell is critical of the city’s 1-cent local option sales tax, which funds road improvements through 2034. “Why? Why are people’s taxes so high here?” Bradwell questioned, expressing concern that the tax will never be removed. “They will always find a reason that we need to keep that money coming in,” Bradwell said.

In contrast, O’Donnell highlights her achievements in office, emphasizing her commitment to integrity, accessibility, and transparency. “In this position, I’ve brought an integrity. I’ve been extremely accessible. I’ve also helped foster more transparency within the city,” she said. O’Donnell also points to her efforts in promoting economic development and securing funds for flood protection, stating, “I think Cedar Rapids will be considered the gold standard.”…
