Popeyes nears agreement with rogue Iowa franchisee

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Popeyes’ parent company now says it may reach an agreement with an Iowa franchisee operating in violation of a franchise agreement and who owes the state nearly a million dollars in unpaid taxes.

An amended federal lawsuit filed this month now says 7 Iowa Popeyes locations are operating in violation of a franchise agreement. All seven locations are run by Asif Poonja’s company, Jam Equities:

  • Coralville at 740 Coral Ridge Ave.
  • NW Cedar Rapids at 3401 E Ave. NW
  • NE Cedar Rapids at 370 Blairs Ferry Rd. NE
  • Dubuque at 4825 Asbury Rd.
  • Waterloo at 4015 Lowes Blvd.
  • Des Moines at SE 14th St.
  • Des Moines at 4140 Merle Hay Rd.

A court filing on Monday asked for an extension on a filing deadline, stating “the Parties have been discussing a resolution and are cautiously optimistic that the parties will reach an agreement that would resolve the case in its entirety. The requested extension will allow the parties to reach a resolution without further Court intervention, thereby conserving judicial resources and avoiding the parties from incurring additional fees and costs.”

If a resolution is reached, it is unlikely the public would know the details of the agreement between two private companies…
