“Know your charity” to protect yourself from charity fraud on Giving Tuesday

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The FBI says you should watch where your money is going on Giving Tuesday.

“Whether you are shopping, connecting with loved ones, or looking to give back, there are small, but important steps everyone can take to better protect themselves online,” said Wayne A. Jacobs, special agent in charge of FBI Philadelphia. “If you didn’t call them, don’t tell them—never share personal or banking information on an unsolicited call. If the link is a mystery, the risk isn’t — don’t click unrequested links. Use secure payment methods and verify charitable organizations before donating.”

Giving Tuesday is a chance to support those groups and organizations who need a little extra help at the end of the calenda year. Charity fraud takes advantage of a victim’s generosity by collecting money for fake organizations or groups who do little or no good in your community…
